Matthew 21:1–11
The King Arrives

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. In this sermon, we examine how Jesus intentionally fulfilled Old Testament prophecy while presenting Himself as a King unlike any other. Rather than arriving with military power or political force, He entered humbly on a donkey, revealing a kingdom defined by peace, servanthood, and salvation.

The crowds that welcomed Jesus with palm branches and shouts of “Hosanna” were filled with expectation. Many believed He would be a conquering king who would overthrow Roman rule and restore Israel’s national prominence. However, their understanding of Jesus was incomplete. While they praised Him outwardly, they failed to grasp the true nature of His mission—to defeat sin and death rather than earthly oppressors. This disconnect highlights the ongoing human tendency to shape God according to our own expectations.

This message also challenges listeners to reflect on their personal response to Jesus. It is possible to outwardly honor Christ while inwardly resisting His authority. True discipleship requires more than praise; it demands surrender, obedience, and a life transformed by the Holy Spirit. As Holy Week begins, this sermon calls believers to recognize Jesus not just as a figure of admiration, but as the rightful King who reigns over every aspect of life.
